With a discography dating back to 2008, Bang Yongguk has become a force to be reckoned with in the world of music. The artist is no newbie when it comes to touring in London, however, the last time his fans were able to see him was back in 2019, when he performed in Camden’s Underworld. This year, the rapper embarked on a world tour, The Colors of Bang Yongguk, that started in the US in May. And as of July, Yongguk has begun his European tour with its first stop in London.

Within the vibrant heart of Camden Lock, Dingwalls provided the perfect place for Yongguk’s engaging show. This legendary venue is known for hosting artists such as Noel Gallagher, Imagine Dragons, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Foo Fighters, just to name a few. The intimate setting allowed fans to dive into his music as the rapper’s powerful beats reverberated through the venue, creating superb energy throughout. Accompanied by Samuel Ko, a DJ and producer, Yongguk set fire to the venue the moment he stepped onto the stage.
Yongguk began his set with G.M.T (also known as Give Me That), a song from his 2022 EP, 2, which features a mixture of heavy Rock with Hip-hop bass. As the first notes travelled through the room, the artist’s rap intertwined with the melodies, creating a rich sound that caused the venue’s floor to tremble. The song itself is a powerful track that reflects Yongguk’s determination and drive. While lyrics are always there for one’s individual interpretation, I have always felt that G.M.T radiates a strong sense of self-assurance and resilience, with Yongguk asserting that he possesses the vision and power to succeed. He challenges the listener to recognise his authenticity and uniqueness, highlighting the distinction between himself and others. The song was followed by UP, also from the above-mentioned EP, and after that, it was finally time for Yongguk to address the crowd.

“Are you ready to go crazy?”, the rapper shouted alongside the deafening screams of his fans. To the sound of endless cheers, Yongguk moved on to perform Race. With its strong pre-chorus, the artist shot the verses with great precision, as expected. The song itself has strong lyrics that bring a sense of currency and the need to keep pushing forward despite challenges and setbacks.
Obviously, there wouldn’t be a show without the songs from his newest release, The Color of Love. Rain on Me and UFO showed a more cheerful side to Yongguk as an artist. Although the aforementioned EP has a happier vibe than his previous releases, it still carries the same emotional weight. Yongguk explored the depths of love with such intensity that his words became a profound means of expressing his emotions to his fans. Followed by Hikikomori and I Remember, with the second track being an oldie from 2011, there was no sign of the rapper slowing down his show.

“I am amazed by your love and support”, Yongguk candidly told the crowd. Those who know the rapper’s background are aware of how much the support of his fans means to him. And one can be reassured, he does not take it for granted. On the contrary, he embraces all the love and support that he receives with an open heart.
Yongguk’ setlist also included songs such as Green, Screwed Up, Ride or Die, and Yamazaki. With his passionate and intensive performance, the rapper hypnotised the crowd. Yongguk’s compelling stage presence, combined with his energy, created an engaging experience for everyone.

The show itself lasted an hour and a half, with Xie Xie and See You Later ending the artist’s concert. Yongguk’s performance, mixed with emotions and powerful lyrics, will definitely stay with those who came to his show for a while. The fans who gathered in Dingwalls were surely swept away by the flames of Yongguk’s creativity as an artist.
