The Festival of Korean Dance is back for its seventh year at The Place, marking its debut tour to Scotland followed by stops in Newcastle, London, and Bournemouth, reimagining traditional Asian values and narratives in contemporary settings.
Kontemporary Korea kicks off the festivities at Tramway on May 16 before heading to Dance City, The Place, and Pavilion Dance South West. This double bill features Flight by Melancholy Dance Company, making their festival debut, and Tomorrowisnowtodayisyesterday (TiNTiY) by Sung Im Her, a returning audience favorite known for her engaging reinterpretations of modern life.
On May 25, Burnt Offering by 99 Art Company takes the stage at The Place, inviting contemplation on the necessity of new rituals and the preservation of tradition. Dancers navigate through mundane routines, their lives devoid of meaning until a “life-changing” dance emerges, inspired by a sense of purpose and tradition.
Closing the festival on May 31 at The Place and June 4-5 at The Lowry, CHEOK by Ae-soon Ahn explores the concept of personal measurement through the lens of the Korean word meaning ‘span of the hand.’ Ae-soon Ahn, a former Artistic Director of Korea National Contemporary Dance Company, brings her rich experience and innovative choreography to unravel the complexities of individuality and tradition.
