In the dynamic and competitive world of K-pop, the journey of an artist is often marked by triumphs and tribulations, with each chapter contributing to their growth and evolution. Lim Youngmin‘s journey was filled with many ups and downs, and, although the journey wasn’t the easiest one, Youngmin showed that with patience, determination, and willingness to correct one’s mistakes, you can achieve your goals. But what do we know about this talented singer and rapper?
Produce 101 Season 2 and the Birth of MXM
The year 2017 marked a significant turning point in Youngmin‘s career. He joined the second season of Mnet’s survival show, Produce 101, as part of the Brand New Music trainees. While he didn’t secure a spot in the final lineup of Wanna One, his participation on the show gained attention.
In a twist of fate, Youngmin teamed up with another eliminated contestant, Kim Dong Hyun, and together they debuted as the duo MXM on September 6, 2017. Their mini album Unmix and its title track I’m The One presented, not only impressive vocals but their ability to make good music too. MXM was not only a musical venture but also a stepping stone for the upcoming Brand New Music boy group, then known as BRANDNEWBOYS.
YDPP: Collaborations and Expanding Horizons
Youngmin’s journey continued in 2018 with the formation of the project group YDPP, a collaboration between Starship Entertainment and Brand New Music. The group brought together MXM members, Youngmin and Kim Dong Hyun, with Starship trainees Jeong Sewoon and Lee Kwang Hyun. Their digital single Love It Live It unveiled their balanced mix of talents.
AB6IX and Overcoming Adversity
In 2019, Youngmin’s path led him to the debut of AB6IX, a boy group formed by Brand New Music. Comprising all four Brand New Music trainees from Produce 101 and an additional member, AB6IX burst onto the scene with their EP B: Complete and the title track Breathe. Their fresh sound and dynamic performances attracted many fans globally. However, 2020 brought a challenge that tested Youngmin’s character which made him leave AB6IX. Despite the setback, Youngmin’s sincere reflection and apology showed his commitment to personal growth and accountability.
A Solo Debut and Redemption
The story of Youngmin continued to unfold with his solo journey. In January 2023, he ventured into the world of social media by opening an Instagram account, allowing fans a closer look into his life. On August 13, 2023, he made a triumphant announcement: his solo debut with the EP Room, which was released on August 29. This particular EP marked a new chapter in his career that many fans were waiting for. Room is a blend of both personal storytelling and creative exploration, and contains the following tracks: Let Me Out, Broken Wings, Again, and In My Room. It is worth mentioning that Youngmin was involved in writing and composing the aforementioned EP.
Personal Growth and the Future
Beyond the stages and spotlights, Youngmin’s journey is a reminder that growth is an ongoing process. His time in the military, marked by a sincere letter of apology, allowed him to reflect on his actions and emerge with a renewed sense of purpose. As he continues to write his story, it’s evident that he’s using every experience, whether challenging or rewarding, to shape his identity as an artist and as a person.
