The HU, a Mongolian folk-metal band, has taken the global music scene by storm with their one-of-a-kind country’s traditional sounds and heavy metal, a genre they call “Hunnu Rock.” Founded in 2016, the band incorporates throat singing, ancient instruments such as the morin khuur (horsehead fiddle) and tovshuur (lute), and lyrics inspired by Mongolian war cries and poetry. Their music celebrates Mongolia’s rich cultural heritage and history, drawing inspiration from the Xiongnu empire.
The band, comprising Galbadrakh “Gala” Tsendbaatar, Nyamjantsan “Jaya” Galsanjamts, Enkhsaikhan “Enkush” Batjargal, and Temuulen “Temka” Naranbaatar, trained at the Mongolian State Music and Dance Conservatory before joining forces under the guidance of producer Bayarmagnai “Dashka” Dashdondog. Their debut album The Gereg (2019) and its follow-up Rumble of Thunder (2022) presented their fusion of ancient traditions with modern metal.
The HU’s impact on the international music scene has been immense. In 2019, they became the first Mongolian band to top a Billboard chart with their single Wolf Totem and were honoured with the Order of Genghis Khan for their role in promoting Mongolian culture globally. They’ve toured extensively, collaborated with artists like Lzzy Hale and Serj Tankian, and contributed tracks to the Star Wars Jedi video games.
The HU also highlights the beauty of Mongolia’s traditions and landscapes. Their work is a celebration of their homeland’s deep history, vibrant culture, and the universal human spirit. Whether performing on global stages or lending their music to blockbuster franchises, The HU continues to share Mongolia’s cultural treasures with the world.
