Since emerging in Korea’s indie music scene with his critically acclaimed debut album 201 (2010) -which won Best Modern Rock Album at the Korean Music Awards – The Black Skirts has established himself as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary rock. His music is filled with poignant lyricism, atmospheric instrumentals, and a nostalgic quality that attracted global listeners.
Born in Seoul but raised in New Jersey, Jo’s musical identity was shaped by Western rock and alternative influences, citing Alanis Morissette and Michael Jackson as early inspirations. His journey as a musician began in New York, where he formed the punk band Castel Prayon, before returning to Korea in 2006 to pursue a solo career. Under the moniker The Black Skirts, he introduced a fresh sound to Korea with albums like Don’t You Worry Baby (I’m Only Swimming) (2011), Thirsty (2019), and Teen Troubles (2022).
Jo has maintained creative independence despite industry shifts, founding his label Doggy Rich after parting ways with HIGHGRND in 2018. His English-language EP Good Luck to You, Girl Scout! (2021) demonstrated his versatility and ability to write universally relatable narratives, drawing inspiration from personal experiences and relationships.
Now, as he prepares to take the stage in Europe for the first time, fans can expect a special performance for sure. For indie rock lovers and longtime followers alike, this is a tour not to be missed.
