As we eagerly await Lee Seongjong’s solo showcase in Europe, it’s a thrilling time for both the artist and his fans. Ahead of his tour, we had a quick chat with the singer about his new release, his music, and his expectations for the upcoming showcase.
Congratulations on your new music release! What was the inspiration behind your latest release “The One”? I am curious about the creative process behind this release, and when you wrote the song, how did you get into the right frame of mind to write it? What kind of approach did you use to write your lyrics?
I focused on what stories I wanted to tell my fans from the get-go when I wrote “The One”. I was fortunate to be able to write the lyrics by myself, so the [words I wrote] became like a sincere letter addressed to my fans.
You’re about to embark on your first solo European showcase tour. What are you most excited about, and what do you hope to accomplish during the tour?
I’m so excited at the thought of meeting my fans after so long. And I also want to show people what my attributes are as a solo artist.
You’ve been in the K-pop industry for a while now. How has your approach to music and performing changed over the years?
I used to follow a pre-fixed schedule [when I was under my previous company], but nowadays, [with a new company] I develop my schedule [along with my team]. I put in effort every day to [perform even better].
You have a large and dedicated fanbase. How do you interact with your fans, and what do you think is the most important thing to keep in mind when engaging with them?
I try to communicate with them through social media and concerts. I’m always thinking about how I can repay the love my fans have shown me. [I do believe] that the most important thing is to communicate with sincerity.
What are your plans for the future of INFINITE and your solo career?
I’ll continue to work hard as a member of INFINITE. And I should keep growing as an artist, [whether it is with my group or as a soloist].
Looking at your life, to what extent do you think your surroundings have shaped you, creatively speaking, and in what way?
I think everything affects me. My parents, my fellow INFINITE members, and the people who work at my company.
When I listen to music, I see shapes and colours. What happens in your mind when you’re listening to your favourite tune, and how does it influence your approach to creativity?
I like songs that have lyrics that create a sense of yearning or longing, and I feel the most emotions when I listen to those types of songs. I try to focus on the lyrics, and I like to imagine myself in the same situation. When I put myself in a situation that I haven’t experienced before, it gives me other ideas that become nourishment for my songwriting.
How would you describe your development as an artist in terms of your interests and challenges, your search for a personal voice, and your breakthroughs?
I keep taking on challenges as there is no growth without them. My voice keeps improving, as does my style, so you’ll see a lot of changes from the early days since my debut.
What advice would you give to aspiring K-pop idols who are trying to break into the industry?
You should think hard about whether your dream is really to become a star. If it is, then you have to give it your all and put in the time and effort, and I hope you do it in a healthy way. Maintaining a good mental and physical state is important.
Finally, is there anything you’d like to say to your fans, especially those who are eagerly anticipating your European showcase tour?
I’m working hard on it. Thank you for your infinite support and love; our journey is never-ending.
