The annual SFFILM Awards Night is set to honour a selection of distinguished talents in the world of film at its 2024 fundraiser gala, scheduled for December 9 at San Francisco’s Gateway Pavilion. The evening will be dedicated to celebrating the work of visionary filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, renowned actress Demi Moore, emerging director Malcolm Washington, and celebrated storyteller Jason Reitman. Each will receive individual accolades recognizing their contributions to the cinematic landscape, underscoring SFFILM’s commitment to supporting film artistry and the creative community.
Denis Villeneuve, acclaimed for his work on Dune and Blade Runner 2049, will be honored with the Irving M. Levin Award for Film Direction. This award, named after the founder of the San Francisco International Film Festival, has previously been awarded to directors like Greta Gerwig and Ryan Coogler. Villeneuve’s immersive storytelling and breathtaking visuals have made him a modern master of film direction.
Demi Moore will receive the Maria Manetti Shrem Award for Acting, acknowledging her decades-long, iconic career, which includes films such as Ghost and G.I. Jane. Most recently, Moore has impressed critics with her role in The Substance at Cannes, solidifying her reputation as a powerhouse in both film and television.
Malcolm Washington, an emerging director making his feature debut with The Piano Lesson, will be awarded the George Gund III Award for Virtuosity. Washington’s journey from short film accolades to feature directing speaks to his promise in the industry and his potential for continued impact.
Jason Reitman, known for his deeply human storytelling in films like Juno and Up in the Air, will be presented with the Nion McEvoy & Leslie Berriman Award for Storytelling. Reitman’s work exemplifies the profound and transformative nature of storytelling in film, and his latest projects continue to engage audiences with fresh narratives and emotional depth.
Anne Lai, Executive Director of SFFILM, emphasised the organization’s mission to nurture and elevate voices that bring bold stories to life. “SFFILM Awards Night celebrates not only the artistic achievements of these filmmakers but also supports the next wave of artists who are reshaping the future of cinema.” Proceeds from the event will fuel SFFILM’s educational initiatives and grants, fostering talent from aspiring creators to seasoned artists.
As SFFILM’s biggest fundraiser of the year, this event stands as a cornerstone of the Bay Area’s cultural landscape, bringing together industry figures, artists, and patrons. It also offers attendees the opportunity to contribute directly to the organization’s year-round efforts in youth education, film screenings, and artist development, ensuring that film continues to inspire and engage audiences across generations.
The 2024 SFFILM Awards Night will be a night of reverence, artistry, and impactful philanthropy. Attendees and supporters alike are invited to share in the celebration of film’s brightest talents and the future stars of the cinematic world.
