Few artists can claim the lasting success and relevance that K-pop star IU has achieved. Born Lee Ji-eun in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, she debuted in 2008 at just fifteen. Since then, she has become a veteran in the Korean music industry, handling decades of music across various genres and also making appearances in a few drama series and feature films. IU’s career spans a wide spectrum of musical styles, and she has amassed a global fanbase, a career many only dream of. And while she has been in the industry for over 16 years now, she has never performed in Europe until her recent show at OVO Wembley Arena in London to an audience of over 10,000.
The concert felt more like a theatrical experience as it was divided into several acts – Hypnotic, Energetic, Romantic, Ecstatic and Heroic – bringing a special flair. The show opened with Holssi from her sixth EP, The Winning, released in February of this year. IU made a dramatic entrance on an elevated stage, dressed in white and accompanied by a live band and dancers. The excellent use of large side screens ensured that every audience member had a fantastic view.
Jam Jam, from her 2017 album Palette, followed, bringing more dancers and an upbeat vibe. The relaxed feel of the pre-chorus, complemented by layered voices and the sudden reintroduction of the bassline, created a delightful contrast. Experiencing this song performed live was truly a treat for the ears. IU greeted the audience with a mix of Korean and English, sharing her excitement for her first London show and her love for the city. Her sweet personality shone through, enhanced by her mother giving out gift boxes to the fans ahead of the show.
Hello London, it’s my first show here in London, nice to meet you all. I have been singing for almost 17 years but this is my first show in London. It’s amazing, I really love this city, thank you! I promise we will have a great time tonight. – IU
The performance of Ah Puh, from her 2021 LILAC album, was wonderful to witness. IU connected with the audience as she walked around making eye contact while delivering powerful live vocals. Bbibbi, a self-written single from 2018 commemorating her tenth debut anniversary, brought a slower, jazzy/bluesy feel, perfectly synchronised with the dancers. IU’s vocal delivery was impeccable, even while performing dance routines. The transition from one song to another was superb. Obliviate, from her 2013 album Modern Times, added a Latin glamour with classical guitar and stunning choreography. The jazz and Latin influences, combined with IU’s striking melisma at the end of the pre-choruses, made the song irresistible to listen to.
A short VCR break moved the show into a new narrative, setting the stage for Celebrity. IU changed into a pink dress, and syncronised glow sticks transformed the arena into a rainbow cloud. The song, a dance-pop track from her album LILAC, was performed with perfect live execution, reaffirming her talent yet again. Blueming, off her 2019 EP Love Poem, brought a positive, happy vibe, displaying IU’s energetic performance as well. During I Stan U performance, IU shared a special message and took a selfie with the audience; her powerful vocals and honest lyrics also created a heartwarming moment for many.
[After performing “Celebrity”] I was really charged with emotions, you sang this song from the beginning until the end. How’s this even possible? You made me really emotional. For the second part of the shows I prepared more energetic songs for you. – IU
The show’s Romantic section included Havana, where IU’s Latin influence glowed through in a blue flowery dress. Performing a cover of Corinne Bailey Rae’s Just Like a Star IU’s guitar skills and clear vocals were a treat for the audience. The acoustic version of Strawberry Moon and Through the Night additionally exhibited her musical versatility and the crowd’s impressive sing-along. Yes, the audience was perfectly in tune!
The final act brought more dynamism with Shopper, featuring a change into a stunning red mini dress and phenomenal laser lighting. Above the Time, a slow song from Love Poem, beautifully connected to the next track, YOU&I, which had cheerful performance and impeccable choreography. Love Wins All, from IU’s latest release Winning, was probably one of my favourite performances. Popular for its great music video and important message, it always rekindles my belief in love and the power of love.
The first encore featured, Shh.., and Twenty-three, each song demonstrating IU’s all-round and enduring appeal. The artist showed her edgy side in a black leather top and mini skirt, proving she can master any genre. The second encore, or en-encore, included Someday, LILAC, Love Poem, and an acoustic version of Palette. Each song was delivered with heartfelt emotion and precision, leaving me wondering if there is another female Korean artist who could bring such an intense performance.
The show itself ran for almost 3 hours, and it was one of the best shows I have attended this year. It was a pure visual feast with a dynamite performance from IU, the live band, and her incredible dancers. At the heart of IU’s presence in Korea’s ever-growing music industry is her ability to balance enduring celebrity with sincere artistic expression.
In a world overflowing with talent, IU is a polished diamond, cleverly maintaining her relevance while delivering pure, honest music.
