The Asian Film Awards have once again shown the genius of Asian cinema, with Exhuma taking the lead in this year’s nominations. Earning an impressive 11 nominations across major categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Newcomer, Best Screenplay, and more, Exhuma has quickly become a prime example of the power and international recognition of Korean cinema. In addition to the major nominations, Lim Ji-yeon from Revolver is up for Best Supporting Actress, while Hong Kyeong-pyo, the cinematographer of Harbin, earned a Best Cinematography nomination, further cementing the growing influence of Korean filmmakers in the global scene.
Meanwhile, Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, a Hong Kong action epic, has also garnered a remarkable presence at the awards, with nominations in nine categories, including Best Film and Best Supporting Actor. The film’s riveting story, set within the infamous Walled City, has become a massive hit in Hong Kong, ranking second in all-time box office revenue. Additionally, Teki Cometh and All We Imagine As Light, both of which have strong ties to the Busan International Film Festival, are generating further excitement with multiple nominations, showing the dynamic range of Asian cinema.
Notably, Sammo Hung, the legendary icon of Hong Kong cinema, has been appointed as the Jury President for this year’s awards. Known for both his acting and directing talent, Hung is a towering figure in the industry, reaffirmed by the success of Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In and his recent Lifetime Achievement Award at the 16th Asian Film Awards. His appointment as jury president reflects his dedication to advancing Asian cinema, and he will lead a panel of over 200 jurors in selecting the winners of this prestigious event.
The 18th Asian Film Awards will celebrate the very best of Asian filmmaking, continuing to honour the immense talent and innovation coming from the region. This includes Special Awards such as the Lifetime Achievement Honor, Rising Star of Asia Award, and AFA Next Generation Award. The awards ceremony will take place on March 16 at the Xiqu Centre in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District, with a live stream available for global audiences.
