Few filmmakers have left a mark on Asian cinema as deeply as Tsui Hark. A great storyteller and pioneer of modern Hong Kong film, Tsui has long captured audiences’ imagination with his genre-defying style. This year, the Far East Film Festival honours his incredible legacy with the Golden Mulberry Award for Lifetime Achievement, to be presented by acclaimed actor Tony Leung Ka-Fai on Wednesday, 30 April.
The award coincides with the international premiere of Tsui’s latest epic, Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants, along with screenings of the newly restored Shanghai Blues and cult favourite Green Snake, featured in the festival’s retrospective Yōkai and Other Monsters.
While the FEFF and Tsui Hark have crossed paths over the years – from 2015’s explosive Closing Night to an in-depth 2007 interview – this is the first time the festival fully celebrates his legacy. And the celebration continues with Sylvia Chang, star of Shanghai Blues, receiving her own Golden Mulberry Award on Thursday, 1 May.
Tsui Hark’s contributions are nearly impossible to sum up in a few lines. He’s the force behind Once Upon a Time in China, the Detective Dee series, and helped shape classics like A Better Tomorrow and The Killer through his Film Workshop. Whether directing, producing, or acting, Tsui has always chased bold ideas and cinematic magic.
From fantasy blockbusters to Hollywood action films, his work proves that film, at its best, is where dreams are made – and shared with the world.
