Dark, sexy, and possessing something a little more than the average K-pop boy group, OMEGA X are finally back with UNCAPPED: seemingly unleashing everything they hadn’t already. They’re currently a prime seven; after Hwichan, Sebin and Kevin’s return to activity, the boys clearly wanted to come back with a bang. The titular track features afrobeats, an energetic EDM chorus, and affirmations that they’ve ‘got no limit’. The song’s music video is a visual treat for those who like a good dance; the choreography is dynamic and presents as many confident, broad moves as you’d expect with the song.
After a two-year hiatus, expectations were high for this one, and they might’ve just exceeded them.
During that time, four members branched off to keep the party moving; OX:N is the subunit of OMEGA X consisting of Jaehan, Xen, Jehyun, and Yechan. Their style was a lot more suave, with “SUIT & TIE” and “YOU” unveiling their inner Justin Timberlakes. Just like in the main group, Jaehan, Xen and Yechan all took part in producing or writing something for the subunit. Being so musically inclined, it’s no wonder the three couldn’t stay away from the studio for too long.
This comeback, however, is special. The members of OMEGA X gave fans as much power as possible, putting even things like their hair colour up to a fan vote. This, of course, gave the members the opportunity not even like the decisions they ended up with, but that makes it all the more fun, doesn’t it? In an exclusive interview with View of the Arts, we asked the boys their honest thoughts on these, if this comeback came with any surprises, and more about UNCAPPED.
Since we’ve come back as OMEGA X after such a long time, I want to be “UNCAPPED” in whatever situations and stages we’re given! – JEHYUN
View of the Arts: To all the members: how does it feel to be back as an ensemble after two years?
JAEHAN: I’m really happy for the comeback that we’ve been waiting for so long. I’m especially glad to be able to present our album to our fans who’ve waited for us.
HWICHAN: I’m so grateful and happy to be promoting with members as OMEGA X after two years.
SEBIN: I was quite nervous because it’s been a while since our last comeback, but I wanted to show everyone what we’ve got as soon as possible.
XEN: Since this was an album that wasn’t easy to complete, it feels even more meaningful, and the more we go on this promotion, the more it sinks in that we’ve made a comeback as OMEGA X.
JEHYUN: I’m happy and having fun being back under the name OMEGA X and meeting our fans who’ve waited for so long.
KEVIN: I’m very excited and a little nervous at the same time, and I feel good thinking about presenting and sharing a new album for our fans who’ve been waiting.
YECHAN: It makes me realize again that I made the right choice to choose this career and join this team.
VOA: OMEGA X collaborated with Kooky to give the wheel to fans: FOR X were able to give their input on some of your styling, unit formations, and most importantly, which song would become the main promoted title track of the mini-album. What were some of the fans’ decisions that surprised you the most?
JAEHAN: The unit member lineup was different from what I expected. I thought JAEHAN, XEN, and HWICHAN would be grouped together as a vocal unit.
SEBIN: The title track vote result was the most surprising to me.
XEN: I think it went as expected. At the same time, it made me realize that the color of OMEGA X that I have in mind is similar to the direction our fans want.
JEHYUN: I think I felt once again just how much taste can really differ through the title track selection result.
KEVIN: I don’t think there was anything particularly surprising, but I’m just grateful our fans put in their votes, and I love that we built the album together.
YECHAN: It was exciting to see every vote result, and it felt like getting to know FOR X better.
VOA: And are there any of those decisions that you strongly agree or disagree with?
HWICHAN: I never doubted our fans’ choices at all. I loved every result so much.
SEBIN: I very much agreed with the result of the vote on my hairstyle.
XEN: We planned and talked especially through the title track ourselves a lot, so I could relate even more to “UNCAPPED” being chosen as the title track.
VOA: The mini-album name, UNCAPPED, refers to the release of bottled emotions in a momentous act of self-liberation. Do you have any emotions that are fresh with this comeback in particular?
HWICHAN: I’d say freedom and love, understanding and letting go.
SEBIN: I felt that we really can take on and pull off anything.
JEHYUN: Since we’ve come back as OMEGA X after such a long time, I want to be “UNCAPPED” in whatever situations and stages we’re given!
KEVIN: With a comeback after a while, I was overflowing with emotions I wanted to let out all at once.
I’m really happy for the comeback that we’ve been waiting for so long. I’m especially glad to be able to present our album to our fans who’ve waited for us. – JAEHAN

VOA: “Day Zero” is a fantastic way to open the mini-album. It begins with rousing synths, incorporates UK garage elements, and never lets up on the fervour in its danceable choruses. Jaehan and Yechan, you took part in the composing of this song. What influenced some of your own decisions in making the track, and were there any specific garage musicians that inspired you?
JAEHAN: The main thing I kept in mind while making the song was that I didn’t want it to feel like it was dragging. I tried to make the melody in a way that could hold some level of tension all the way through.
YECHAN: I studied by listening to a lot of different Garage DJ mixes and playlists. During that process, I learned that adopting melodies from other genres that have a similar BPM gives it a fresher feel.
VOA: To all the members who took part in composing something of the album – Jaehan, Yechan and Xen – what were your favourite personal contributions to the mini-album?
JAEHAN: I love the line in “Life Detox” that goes, “Roughly tightening the screws that loosened up somewhere (어딘가 풀어진 나사를 대충 조여).” I loved the meaning behind this line; instead of tightening the screw too perfectly, let’s live a bit loosely sometimes.
XEN: “Close to me” is my personal favorite track, but I also love the pre-chorus of “Life Detox” that has the line I worked on. HWICHAN sang that part so beautifully.
YECHAN: I love the second rap verse in “Life Detox.” It reflects the line and lyrics that came to me naturally while writing the song, which made me realize that good music sometimes comes from spontaneity.
VOA: Those who took part in composing some of the tracks are no strangers to doing so on OMEGA X and OX:N songs. But did any of the members get the opportunity to try a completely new skill with the creation of UNCAPPED?
HWICHAN: I think it’s my first time taking on a unit dance song, which was exciting and fun.
JEHYUN: The unit lineup of “Cork” itself was such a new combination, so I think we all thought extra hard and took on the challenge together to create the best chemistry we could in this unit.
KEVIN: I think it’s SEBIN who took on new challenges through this album. There are many moments in the album that showcase his potential, and in fact, he was able to share many new charms as well, which I’m very happy for.
While listening to the songs, I hope people feel a sense of liberation and freedom, just like the title, and be able to enjoy that moment. – KEVIN
VOA: The music video to UNCAPPED, which won its rightful place as the title track, shows off the song’s choreography in its entirety. What are your own favourite moves of the routine?
JAEHAN: My favorite part is the first intro. I really liked the points that snap right onto the beat.
HWICHAN: I think SEBIN’s kick performance is cool in the “UNCAPPED” choreography.
SEBIN: I like the final performance where I’m at the center. I think the kick part is great.
XEN: I like the opening intro part the most because I’m the center there. (laughs)
JEHYUN: I think I like the choreography in the last dance break. It’s really tough, but I love that it truly captures the overall vibe of UNCAPPED.
KEVIN: I like YECHAN’s part in the beginning the most since it sets the mood of the song, and I think it really suits YECHAN’s voice.
YECHAN: The dance break after the second verse chorus feels like a dopamine rush. Even though it’s tough to perform on stage, the song’s over before I know it once I start dancing.
VOA: If each song on the mini-album were assigned an ideal setting to listen in – for example, a cozy bedroom to “Life Detox” – what would you recommend to fans?
JAEHAN: “Day Zero” – in a car ride on the way out to have fun
“UNCAPPED” – anywhere with your friends
“Close to me” – on a busy, crowded street
“Cork” – by the beach in broad daylight
“Life Detox” – by the beach at sunset
SEBIN: I’d recommend listening to “Day Zero” in the morning as an alarm while you’re still in bed.
VOA: Of all the emotions and feelings that can be ‘uncapped’ through the listening of this mini-album, which do you hope listeners will feel the most?
XEN: I want to tell people that things are not that difficult and that it’s all in how you think in your mind.
JEHYUN: I don’t think there’s such a thing as permanent liberation or release. But even so, I hope that within the reality we’re living in now, people can hear our songs and feel free even for a moment. Beyond that, I hope they’ll just enjoy our music with us.
KEVIN: While listening to the songs, I hope people feel a sense of liberation and freedom, just like the title, and be able to enjoy that moment.
YECHAN: I want to share that we can let any stress pass us by, lightly and coolly, because we all deserve to be loved just by existing.
